Treatment of Atopic Dermatitis in dogs and cats

In cats with ‘triaditis’ the affected organs are the intestines, the pancreas and the biliary tract. Administer 4.4 milligrams of medication orally per day per kilogram of body weight. Take two milligrams orally per day for every kilogram of body weight.

If an inhaler is recommended then ensure you are clear on how to use it, with guidance from your vet. Inhalers used by people work differently from those prescribed for cats because you can’t ask your pet to breathe deeply to trigger release of the drug. Controlling your blood sugar when taking steroids

Symptoms typically emerge within a few days or weeks of starting the treatment. Risks may be higher with high doses/systemic exposure (see also section 4.5), although dose levels do not allow prediction of the onset, type, severity or duration of reactions. Most adverse reactions resolve after either dose reduction or withdrawal of the medicine, although specific treatment may be necessary. Patients/carers should be encouraged to seek medical advice if worrying psychological symptoms develop, especially if depressed mood or suicidal ideation is suspected.

Eosinophilic keratitis/conjunctivitis usually responds quite dramatically to the application of topical corticosteroids, which are given 2-3 times daily initially to effect and slowly tapered once remission occurs. A combined therapy with topical cyclosporine (0.2% Optimmune) is recommended and will be continued after discontinuation of topical steroids for long-term control of the condition. The treatment with topical cyclosporine can be tapered over time, but recurrence of the condition is possible and the eye requires careful long-term monitoring.
